Once Upon a Story

I know, I know... it's been over a week since my last post, and that one was not particularly enlightening. But I've been busy working! Check out my most recent distraction. I've even created a facebook group devoted to it. Feel free to join even if you're too far away to shop there - that is, if facebook is your chosen 'social utility,' of course.     Dude, that place looks like a dream.

    By the by...I noticed the Breaking Dawn advert on the website. Have you been sucked into those books yet? I read 2/3 of the second one yesterday. I can't quite figure out what is so addictive about them. They're not incredibly fast paced and it really seems like nothing happens, but I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

    Its like crack in book form.

    no wonder everyone on the planet is reading them! i haven't picked them up yet for two reasons. 1) i've been trying to read books that could benefit from my promotion. books people aren't picking up right away, but that are awesome. stephanie meyer needs no help. and 2) i have always avoided vampire stories. they give me the heebie jeebies. gross me out. unnerve me. i have heard that these aren't as gross, but i'd rather not convince myself just yet.

    I completely sympathize, I've never been much on vampires (rather unimaginative really), but I've given up on the responsible reading thing. I'd rather read tons of book crack in 3 days than carry around The Idiot with my bookmark on page 30 for 3 months.

    Besides, you can just watch the movies. :)

    That's how I feel about book crack, actually. Why read Harry Potter when I can just see the movies and save hours worth of reading time? Why read Twilight when the movie's coming out? But no film adaptation (and I don't think they've tried) will ever express the beauty and frailty of Prince Mishkin in the Idiot. There are some Victorian novels I might trade for the films, but for the most part... well, I suppose it depends.

    Hmmm...well...

    I've been thinking about it and I have to say that I think that you would enjoy the Twilight books enough to warrant reading them. Its not the story that gets you, its the romance. You can skip Harry Potter, you get the story from the movies, but I don't know if they can capture what makes Twilight different on screen. Mostly because its from the first person perspective of a very average girl.

    And you know I'm a sucker for a good romance... :P

Dear Nathaniel, I am microwaving pie that Mom bought up in Oak Glen this week on her way home from the orthodontist. As I put it in the microwave, I was full of sadness that I was not in Oak Glen with her. Why did I not go? I was working. I want to see the trees turn. Fontastic

One of the perpetual projects in my little publishing company's life is the development of our company logo. This is my favorite project, as it involves the use of fonts. And I am rather a font fanatic. I have spent the last few hours trolling dafont.com, which is a wonderful website of free and mostly-free fonts for personal and often commercial usage. Rather than download every font I like, I sketched out my own versions of each of them as they inspired me. I thought I'd share them with you here, and if any of my noble readers have preferences, feel free to shoot me a comment. I am hoping I have determined the font-of-choice by the time the new website is ready to go up. After all, what's a corporate website without a corporate logo? Being a Baker

Working at the Main Library has surprising advantages. Just now I stepped out of my office, walked five paces across the hall, scanned a badge, and walked under the civic center plaza to the elevator that stretches from beneath the earth up to the mayor’s office on the fourteenth floor. I didn’t have so far to go—just up one level to the utilities counter, where a sympathetic, amused woman named Sue shut down my gas payments. It took less than five minutes. I finished packing up my kitchen days ago. My cake pans were in boxes sometime early last week. But as I walked through the underground loading dock on my way back to the office, I was distinctly aware of the finality of what I’d just done. I would never, from that moment on, be able to bake for anyone out of that kitchen. Maybe it doesn’t seem like a very big deal, but I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of a certain identity, namely being “the person who bakes a lot”.
